Azerbaijan’s oldest mosque, the Shamahi Friday Mosque, is now open for worship after its restoration and expansion have been completed.

Azerbaijan’s oldest mosque, the Shamahi Friday Mosque, is now open for worship after its restoration and expansion have been completed.
The opening of the mosque, which has an important place in the history and cultural heritage of Azerbaijan and has been closed for a long time due to restoration work, was conducted by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
Head of the Caucasus Muslims Administration Allahshukur Pashazade, Mufti of the Russian Federation Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia Ismail Berdiyev, Mufti of Chechnya Soltan Mirzayev and many religious officials attended the ceremony, and gifted a Qur’an to Aliyev as he examined the mosque and received information about the work done.

The Shamali Friday Mosque
Historical sources indicate that the Shamali Friday Mosque as built in 743, and the Hazar state rulers of accepted the religion of Islam there.
The monument, which was destroyed due to earthquakes and other reasons and had to be repaired at various times, was burned in 1918 by Armenian gangs.
The mosque was closed to worship during Soviet rule and reopened in the 80’s.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, extensive restoration and expansion work was begun in 2009 on the mosque, which was formerly repaired by late President Heydar Aliyev.
